SALT LAKE CITY — One man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting in Salt Lake City Thursday night.

An officer heard shots being fired around 10 p.m. in the area of 500 W 200 S, then observed two people running away, according to police.

Police said both the suspect and the victim are undocumented immigrants and neither of them have any form of identification.

Officers have located the weapon and booked the suspect into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

The victim died Friday morning.

Police are trying to determine how the pair may have known each other, or if they did at all.

Officers said they believe both of them were in the area for drug transactions and they may have been using the homeless population as cover for drug activity.

"The practice of people being brought into this area from out of the country and selling drugs is nothing new. This is something that's been going on for some time," said Lt. Greg Wilking, SLCPD.

Police are working to notify the victim's next of kin, but they said his lack of identification is making that difficult.

The shooting is believed to be an isolated incident.
