SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — West Valley City police are looking for a man who they believe committed a fatal hit-and-run in late April.

The suspect, who police have identified as 32-year-old Dylon Sharife Cooke, is accused of hitting and killing 65-year-old John Kin at an intersection in West Valley City.

Officers responded to 5474 W 3500 S shortly before 2:30 p.m. on April 30. A witness told police someone driving a silver BMW with California plates struck Kin, who was riding a bicyle, then fled the scene.

According to a probable cause statement, the witness told police he followed the BMW into a nearby parking lot. The witness told police the BMW driver got out of the car and inspected the front of the vehicle.

“[The witness] confronted the male telling him he needed to go back to the scene because he had hit a person. [The witness] then observed the man enter a nearby business. The man eventually left without retrieving the BMW or returning to the scene of the collision,” police wrote in the probable cause statement.

The witness directed police to the BMW’s location, and they found the BMW’s windshield shattered and “what appeared to be blood and tissue […] on the windshield and roof line,” the probable cause statement says.

Police said a description of the suspect given to them matches Cooke’s driver’s license photo.

Officers spoke with Cooke’s girlfriend, who told them she spoke with Cooke by phone about 40 minutes. During that conversation, police said, Cooke told his girlfriend he had been in an accident and needed to be picked up.

Cooke was described as a black male, between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall and approximately 200 pounds. Police said Cooke has black, medium-length dreadlocks, which were tied back into a ponytail at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information on Cooke’s whereabouts is asked to call West Valley City police at 801-840-4000.
