BOUNTIFUL, Utah — Police in Bountiful have released audio from the 911 call that sent officers rushing toward Mueller Park Jr. High School Thursday morning after a student fired a shot in a classroom and his parents disarmed him.
Police were called at about 8:13 a.m., and a patrol officer responded to the school, arriving 41 seconds after the call was broadcast. That officer entered the school and took the teen into custody, along with securing a 12-gauge shotgun and a 9mm pistol.
No one was hurt during the incident.
The call begins with the dispatcher asking for and receiving the address for the school as a woman speaks quickly, clearly out of breath.
Caller: “By the south-west doors, we have a kid with a gun, his parents have him.”
Dispatcher: “He has a gun?!”
Caller: “He has a gun. Everybody is OK. Nobody is hurt.”
The dispatcher then confirms more details about the location of the student within the school, that everyone is safe, and that the caller is a teacher.
Dispatcher: “Where is the student now with the gun?”
Caller: “His parents have him and both the loaded guns.”
Dispatcher: “The parents have the student?”
Caller: “Yes.”
Dispatcher: “Are the parents being aggressive as well?”
Caller: “They’ve got him against the wall… No, the parents are not. They are worried about him, they are like hand-cuffing him.”
The full call runs about two minutes, and by the end the dispatcher says officers have arrived in the building. The audio is available in the video above.
Police said earlier in the day the 15-year-old boy’s parents had come to the school after noticing the missing weapons from their home and becoming concerned about their son. They were about two classrooms away when the shot was fired.
The student did not say anything during the incident, and police said he pointed the gun at the ceiling and fired, then pointed it at his own neck. His parents took the weapon away from him before any more shots were fired.
The teen has been booked into a juvenile detention facility on several charges. As he is a juvenile, his name has not been released.
