LAYTON, Utah -- A teenage boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Layton Friday night as his 15-year-old friend, who has a learner's permit, was driving.

Joshua Nielson, a 15-year-old sophomore at Northridge High School, was killed in the crash, which occurred at about 7:20 p.m. at Main Street and Reid Avenue.

Joshua was a passenger in a car his 15-year-old friend was driving. Sgt. Clint Bobrowski with Layton City police said the driver had a learner's permit and had taken his parent's car without permission.

As the teens traveled north on Main Street, Bobrowski said, the driver went to make a left turn onto Reid Avenue but failed to yield for a car that was traveling south on Main Street.

The teen's vehicle was struck on the passenger side, Bobrowski said. Pepe Olaya was nearby and rushed to try and offer help.

"I just ran to see what happened, and I saw the passenger, he was smashed against the passenger door," Olaya said. "There was no way to take the kid out of the car without cutting the door."

Joshua was trapped in the vehicle but was extricated by emergency crews. He died while en route to a nearby hospital.

No other serious injuries were reported, and everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

"We wish to express our sorrow for all parties involved in this tragic incident," Layton City police wrote on its Facebook page. "Joshua's family would like us to express their appreciation for privacy while they mourn the loss of their child."
