PROVO, Utah — The family of BYU running backs coach Reno Mahe is asking for prayers from the community, saying they are seeking God’s will as 3-year-old Elsie remains hospitalized with a dire prognosis.

According to the most recent update from the Mahe family posted Friday, an MRI shows that Elsie’s brain is performing basic functions, but “the upper lobes went without oxygen long enough to be devastated.”

The family is asking those who are interested in supporting them to do so by praying and fasting.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes voluntarily go without food or drink for a time, which the Mahe family says helps them feel closer to their Heavenly Father as they replace hunger with prayer during the fast.

The family stated in part:

“We would specifically ask our family and friends to pray to help us know the will of the Lord. We are willing to do whatever the Lord wants, but we need clear minds and pure hearts to know what that is. If He would like to take her home, if He would like her to remain with us but with disabilities, or if His miracle is one of healing for her. We know that He can do it, but we don’t intend to try to force our will to be His.”

Elsie Mahe was rushed to a hospital after she wasfound wrapped up in the cords from some blinds at her family’s home.
