ELKO, Nev. — The Elko County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an alleged scam where people are claiming to be collecting donations on behalf of the families of the victims of a deadly airplane crash.

An American MedFlight plane crashed in Elko November 18, killing all four people aboard.

Wednesday, police took to Facebook to warn residents about an alleged scam preying upon the community in mourning. Individuals going door-to-door in Elko say they are collecting donations for the victims of the crash, but police say the families involved are not seeking donations through such avenues.

Police ask the community to call 775-777-7300 if they encounter anyone who may be involved in the alleged scam.

Donations for the family of Jake Shepherd, a member of the medical crew killed in the crash, are being accepted here. Police also stated donations are being accepted through Wells Fargo Bank, but they did not provide specific details about that memorial account.
