Parenting expert Carol Tuttle shared her ideas for creating the perfect holiday traditions for your family.

1. The powerful 'why' behind traditions

Children will remember how they felt during the holidays much more than they will remember what gifts they got! That is why traditions can be so powerful to help create lasting memories and good feelings that will stay with them throughout their lives.

2. How to know what traditions will create that "why"!

Mom may not always know what traditions will create those strong memories. How I discovered I was missing the mark when it came to holiday traditions was when I realized I was creating more work for myself than was necessary.

Gather your family together sometime in mid-November to early December. Ask everyone to write on a piece of paper the traditions and activities they absolutely love doing during the holidays. Have everyone in the family share their list while a family scribe lists them on a whiteboard or large piece of paper that everyone can see - there is no right or wrong to what goes on the list.
Review the list and decide how many you want to commit to as a family to create this year, considering time, budget, practicality. Let`s say you decide on 5 of them. Go through the list and have everyone vote for their top 3 favorites. The top 5 win! Schedule them on your calendar before your meeting ends.
