Woods Cross teen dies in car crash on Indiana highway

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. — A Woods Cross teenager was killed and nine others were injured in a four-car pileup on Interstate 70 in central Indiana Friday afternoon.

At about 12:49 p.m., Indiana State Police responded to the crash, which took place in westbound lanes at mile marker 59.The Indiana Department of Transportation had temporary road work going on and traffic was moving slowly in the area.

According ISP, 51-year-old Kenneth B. Gieger Jr., of Princeton, Ind., driving a tractor-trailer, failed to slow for traffic and struck the back of a 2012 Ford rental box truck, driven by 39-year-old Matthew Roeder, of Peoria, Ariz., which forced him into the rear of school bus loaded with 23 high school students and five adults.

The tractor-trailer continued to veer left, eventually colliding with a 1998 Chevrolet van. The impact forced the van into the inner barrier cables.

Matthew Roeder’s son, Jace, 19, was traveling as a passenger and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ISP.

Geiger and Matthew Roeder were taken to area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. Seven of the students from the bus were also taken to area hospitals for treatment of complaint of pain and precautionary, according to ISP.

Geiger was cited for following too closely.
