SALT LAKE CITY — The agency that certifies and disciplines police officers in the state has closed its years-long investigation into police officers in the polygamous border town of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.
Utah Peace Officer Standards & Training confirmed to FOX 13 on Thursday that it has ended its investigation into the Colorado City Town Marshal’s Office and will not take action against them. POST Executive Director Scott Stephenson said there was “insufficient evidence” to support a violation of Utah laws governing officer misconduct.
The officers have faced accusations of violating people’s civil rights and scrutiny over their loyalties to polygamist leader Warren Jeffs and the Fundamentalist LDS Church versus their loyalties to the constitutions of Utah and Arizona. The U.S. Justice Department has requested a federal judge disband the police force after it won a lawsuit alleging discrimination by the towns of Hildale and Colorado City against non-FLDS members.
An investigation into the police officers in Arizona is ongoing.
