SALT LAKE CITY - Police are turning to television stations in Salt Lake City for help to solve a murder from 1995. Police say 6-year-old Rosa Tapia was kidnapped, assaulted, and then murdered, her body found in a river outside the family's apartment.
"We have a statement of a suspicious individual that was seen by our witness on a local television station doing an interview," said Lt. Greg Wilking with Salt Lake City Police.
Wilking said that detectives have spent time going back through the hundreds of pages of evidence that was collected from the scene 21 years ago.
He said a witness statement from one of Rosa's friends back then caught detectives eyes now, over two decades later. The friend told police that she and Rosa played on a playground outside the Tapia's apartment just days before Rosa was murdered.
The witness said that a suspicious man stared at the two of them for quite some time, and that same man was seen days after doing a television interview.
Now, police are hoping to find that suspicious person in FOX 13's archived footage. However, the question remains, what does he look like?
"That’s just it," Wilking said. "We don’t know exactly what we’re looking for. This child that saw this interview on camera, and we’re talking quite some time ago, we’re hoping to jog her memory as to what she saw and who this person might be.”
