DRAPER, Utah – Draper City Council voted unanimously to ratify the mayor’s appointment of a new fire chief Tuesday night.
Mayor Troy Walker announced earlier this monththat he had selected Clint Smith to lead the city’s first fire department as they break ties with Unified Fire Authority.
“This is really a unique and challenging experience because there is no infrastructure, no equipment there is no personnel that currently exists,” Smith said.
Walker decided to move ahead with the decision one month after the city council voted to re-evaluate its contract with UFA.
City officials say having control over its own fire department will allow them to manage costs and be more accountable to the public.
Smith, who worked with UFA for nearly 21 years, said the focus now is getting the right tools and people to do the job.
