SAN JOSE, Calif. — It usually takes at least a full quarter for the Ute offense to find its stride, but once it does, they’ve proven to be a handful.
Utah trailed San Jose State early on two different occasions Saturday night before taking the lead for good with a 16 yard run from Troy McCormick in the second quarter. The touchdown gave them the lead at 13-10.
Troy Williams and Tim Patrick then connected from 4 yards out right before the half. A Reggie Porter interception set up the touchdown, and Utah added a couple more scores in the second half to win 34-17 on the road.
But the Utes defense was the story, sacking the Spartans 10 times. That single game total is second highest in school history. Eight different players recorded sacks.
On offense, Williams finished 20-28 for 257 yards.
Utah improves to 3-0 on the season, sweeping non-conference play. The Utes host USC September 23 at home in Salt Lake City, marking the start of PAC-12 play for Utah this season.
The win Saturday night also helped Utah break into the Top 25 for week 4, as the AP Poll has the Utes at No. 24 and the Coaches Poll ranks them No. 23.
