Police: Woman, 3 kids carjacked in Taylorsville; suspect, vehicle found in SLC

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – Police arrested a man early Sunday morning suspected of carjacking a vehicle from a woman and three children the night before.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Friday, a Ford F-150 was driving recklessly on Interstate 15 when the driver, identified as David Lee Haehnel, exited on Redwood Road, according to a press from Unified police.

Soon after, Haehnel crashed the truck in the embankment right of the exit. According to the release, Haenel then got out of his vehicle and approached a black Dodge Durango that was nearby.

The suspect ordered a woman and three children out of the vehicle at gunpoint then left in the Durango.

Authorities broadcast an “attempt to locate” for the vehicle immediately after they learned it was stolen. Salt Lake City police found the Durango in the area of North Temple, the release states. Officers followed the vehicle but lost sight of it in the area of 400 South and 400 West.

As Metro Gang detectives worked the investigation throughout the night, they eventually located the Durango, unoccupied, in the area of 1017 S. 900 West. A suspect matching Haehnel’s description was found in a nearby residence on the 1000 West block of Jeremy Street in Salt Lake City.

According to the release, detectives surrounding the house and called out all occupants. Haehnel complied and was taken into custody.

He was then booked into Salt Lake County Jail.
