PROVO, Utah – Fifth-year Senior Quarterback Taysom Hill has been announced as the starting quarterback for Brigham Young University.

“Production on the field is what wins. We talked about how it would be settled there. I’ll leave it at that, the best guy won,”  said head coach Kalani Sitake.

Ty Detmer, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, said the decision was made this weekend in wake of the Arizona game. Staff wanting to have a solid starting QB ready.

Hill is 100 percent recovered from his foot injury during the BYU vs. Nebraska game last season.

“He’s a fifth-year senior, turned 26 today, got the experience and the leadership of the group. So, we feel comfortable with Hill in there,” Detmer said.

Tanner Mangum will play as backup quarterback, and is guaranteed to still get play time. Last year, Mangum took over as a freshman (fresh off his two-year mission) after Hill’s injury and threw for 3,377 yards, 10 touchdowns, with 59.9 percent completion.

“I spoke to Tanner afterwards, he's super supportive. We've been friends through it all, and we were able to help each other get better," Hill said

On Tuesday, Hill said, he and the offense sat down together and have started to piece together the game plan for Arizona.

“Coach Detmer has a pretty good idea of what I like now, and we’ll start to put it all together and make sure everyone else is comfortable with it, and get ready to go,” Hill said.

BYU’s first game is at Arizona on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
