SALT LAKE CITY – A Salt Lake City man pleaded guilty to torturing a companion animal after the death of his border collie puppy last year.

Mikah Johnson, now 20, was accused of beating his 4-month-old puppy, Moose, on several occasions before it died on Aug. 18, 2015.

On Tuesday, Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of torture of a companion animal, a third-degree felony. He also pleaded guilty to assault, a class B misdemeanor.

During court proceedings, Tuesday, a pre-sentence investigation was ordered. Johnson will be released to the Ankle Monitor Program.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 8:30 a.m.
