SALT LAKE CITY -- Overwhelming numbers during Tuesday's primary election show Governor Gary Herbert will move on to the general election in November.

"We're very gratified," Governor Herbert told FOX 13 shortly after the results were posted. "We're optimistic going into November."

Numbers show Herbert captured about 73 percent of the vote while his opponent Jonathan Johnson garnered about 26% of the vote.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Johnson conceded the race in a phone call to the governor.

"We've done good. We've changed some of the discussion," Johnson told his supporters.

In other election results, Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz defeated his intra-party challenger, Chia-Chi Teng.

On the Democratic side, Jonathan Swinton captured 40 percent of the vote compared to Misty Snow with 60 percent.

She has become the first transgender congressional candidate to earn a major party nomination in U.S. History and would face incumbent Republican Sen. Mike Lee. Late Tuesday, she declared victory.

"While I'm not running on the basis of being a trans woman, my experiences as a trans woman have given me the empathy to understand the struggles of groups that feel the American dream is out of reach," she said in a statement. "I'm running to give a voice to the voiceless."
