Run, hide and fight.

That’s what law enforcement wants the public to do in an active-shooter situation.

After a mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando on June 12, Salt Lake City Emergency Management officials talked about what to do if caught in such a scenario.

"We would like people to think in advance before some of these terrible situations happen," said Cory Lyman, director of the Emergency Management Program.

In a video released by the FBI, is shows a dramatized active-shooter situation in a workplace setting and how the victims ran, hid and fought for their lives.

Lyman compares the new word triplet to “Stop, Drop, and Roll” from fire safety and “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” from earthquake survival.

"First, run if they have the availability,” he explains. “Second, hide, preferably behind a hard object that could stop bullets."

If you end up trapped in an area with a gunman, Lyman encourages to fight for your life.

“Grab a chair, grab a mop handle. Anything you can use to stop that attacker. Even if it's a couple of people," he said.

Fighting is not the first thing authorities want you to do.

“But I don’t want you to become another casualty.... willingly. I want you to fight for your life," said Detective Greg Wilking with Salt Lake City police.

The three strategies can buy time until the police arrive. And when they do, Wilking said, it’s important that officers see your hands and realize you are not a threat.

"And then you go ahead and you say 'well, if I need to flee that situation, where can I go?' Once you've thought about that, once you've programmed that into your thinking, yeah, you can relax and have a good time," Lyman said.
