SALT LAKE CITY — A man was booked into jail on charges including assault on an officer after he allegedly fought with several cops responding to a trespassing call in Salt Lake City Tuesday afternoon.

An officer in the area of 455 South and 500 West was flagged down around 1:33 p.m. Tuesday by employees at a business near a homeless shelter, who pointed out a man who was trespassing and kicking a fence.

According to a watch log from Salt Lake City PD, the officer made contact and began asking the man questions. The suspect did not answer or comply but instead advanced toward the officer and became combative.

Other officers arrived as the initial officer tried to get the man under control, and two officers were repeatedly kicked in the lower legs, according to a PC statement. Police said they could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the suspect.

Police eventually subdued the man, and 32-year-old Agustin R. Diaz was booked into jail to face charges including public intoxication, assault on an officer and criminal trespass.

There were no serious injuries reported in connection with the incident, just scrapes and bruises, and no medical treatments were necessary.
