SALT LAKE CITY -- Those who shop at Costco, Smith's and Trader Joe's in Utah are being warned about hundreds of products that could potentially be contaminated by Listeria.
A food recall was issued for the products due to the potential contamination, which can cause a serious infection.
Costco shopper Connie Willes has received the alert.
"I did get a phone call," Willes said. "Costco called and said I do have items that need to be returned."
Shopper Emily Moore had not heard yet, but she plans to check all her vegetable labels at home.
"It is concerning, and I am a germaphobe anyway, so this doesn't help," Moore said.
Costco has been texting customers about certain vegetable recalls with this message: "CRF Frozen foods recall. Costco records indicate you may have purchased this product."
In total, there are 358 food products that have been recalled due to Listeria contamination within about the last week.
CRF is the source for hundreds of those items, but Kroger Foods, which is sold at Smiths stores, also has several recalls in effect for products like frozen peas, carrots and green beans.
Marsha Gilford is Smiths' public affairs Vice President.
"I myself got a robocall yesterday, (from Smith's) tested the system," Gilford said. "It worked. Found the product, took it back to the store."
Gilford said Smith's uses its rewards cards to track purchases and alert customers, and Costco also uses a similar system. Customers like Willes said they appreciate it.
"I think it's very responsible of them and a great way to keep their customers loyal," Willes said.
The Utah State Health Department's health educator, Rebecca Ward, said Listeria can be a serious infection, requiring antibiotics. She said to look for symptoms like vomiting, and intestinal problems.
Those most at risk are pregnant women and those with weak immune systems.
