WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A male driver is in serious condition after hitting a boulder caused him to roll his truck, officials said early Saturday morning.

The accident occurred in the area of 4700 South and 3500 West at about 1:30 a.m. The drive was pinned inside and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

He was flown to an area hospital in serious condition but was speaking and alert as he left the scene.

Authorities say it appears the main factor to the truck rolling over was due to the driving hitting a large boulder.

“The boulder was moved a significant amount of distance before the vehicle hit a power pole,” said Lt. Blair Barfuss with West Valley City police. “There was substantial damage to the vehicle and to surrounding areas.”

The crash is still under investigation and the motorist will be interviewed after he’s been treated for his injuries, police say.
