SALT LAKE CITY — The airport is expanding again.

The Salt Lake City International Airport announced on Monday that it would be adding another concourse to the terminal redevelopment project, adding 30 extra gates with room to grow. The north concourse would cost $740 million to build, bringing the total project from $1.8 to $2.6 billion.

“This addition is essential in building a state-of-the-art facility to help attract more business and tourism dollars, and completely in line with my plan for robust economic development. We are on track to making the entire experience more efficient and pleasant for everyone,” Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski said in a statement.

The north concourse will replace concourses B, C and D in the current airport. It will connect to the south concourse and the terminal through a passenger tunnel. It will be built alongside the terminal project, with both now expected to be done by 2020.

Salt Lake City International is in the midst of the multi-billion construction project, which will modernize the airport which hasn’t seen an upgrade since the 1980s. The airport authority estimates 22 million passengers fly in and out of Salt Lake City International each year.

Taxpayers are not paying for the construction project — revenue bonds and ticket fees are funding it.
