SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah -- A young boy was flown to a hospital in extremely critical condition Friday night after he was pulled from a small pond, and police confirmed later Friday night he had died.

Police confirmed just before 9 p.m. that the boy had passed away.

The incident occurred in the area of 2800 North Rose Park Lane at a ranch-style residence where several children were playing together on a trampoline.

"We got a call of a possible drowning of a 22-month-old," said Lt. Dan McConkey of the Unified Police Department. "My understanding is he was playing with some other kids on the trampoline, they noticed he was missing, got mom involved, and she found him in the pond behind us."

The child was found in a pond on the residential property, and the boy's father pulled him out and his mother began CPR while help was called for.  Responding medical personnel were able to establish a pulse, and the boy was flown to a hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later died.

The name of the child has not been released.

Police said the incident is a reminder to be vigilant when it comes to small children around water.

“Any body of water, you need to keep track of your kids," McConkey said. "Make sure they are all together, like they did today so they notice it when someone goes missing and can jump into action.”

SafeKids.org notes that young children can drown in as little as one inch of water, and they state drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children ages 1-4. Click here for water safety tips from SafeKids.org.
