Tracking Daphne

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is working to conserve pelican populations, and as part of that effort several of the birds are packing GPS transmitters as they make their migrations.

One of those Pelicans, Daphne, recently returned to Utah after spending the winter in Mexico, and the DWR posted several photos of the bird along with an image of her route south and back.

You can see Daphne and her trip in the image embedded above, and you can check out the progress and location of Daphne and other pelicans in the program anytime by visiting the DWR’s “PeliTrack” website.

According to the DWR, pelicans are generally 10-20 pounds with a wingspan of 8 to 10 feet, and they often appear by the hundreds. However, due to disturbances to their nesting areas and the use of some pesticides, pelicans have had some “tough times” recently. For more on the conservation efforts by the DWR, click here.
