SALT LAKE CITY — The Leonardo museum opened its doors to refugees across the Salt Lake Valley Saturday.

The museum distributed more than 1,500 tickets to refugees living in the community as part of a “Weekend of Welcome.”

The museum is also celebrating the opening of a new exhibited, which is called:  “We Declare: An Exhibit About Human Rights.”

Staff members said they hope to spread a larger message about refugees through that display.

“You know a lot of people recently have been interested in volunteering with refugees and interested in the global refugee crisis in general,” said Colby Page, who works at the Leonardo. “We’ve had the Paris attack, the Syrian refugee crisis, and, most recently, the LDS General Conference has really brought the plight of refugees to the minds of most people in Salt Lake City.”

Local organizations were also on hand to talk to visitors about volunteer opportunities in the community.
