ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Utah State Board of Regents voted to approve a system-wide tuition increase for the 2016-2017 academic school year Friday, and the average increase for the state’s public colleges and universities is 3.7 percent.

According to a press release from the Utah System of Higher Education, the number represents the second-lowest average increase since 1999. The measure passed during a meeting at Dixie State University in St. George.

The press release states the increase is 3.5 percent at six of the eight public institutions of higher education in Utah. The increase at University of Utah is 3.9 percent and Dixie State University will see the largest bump at 5 percent.

“Students are our highest concern,” said David Buhler, Commissioner of Higher Education. “We want to keep tuition as low as possible while providing them a high-quality education. The Board of Regents and institutional presidents have worked hard to ensure the cost of college remains affordable so that the dream of a college education remains accessible to all Utahns.”

The press release notes Utah has the third-lowest average tuition rates for public universities in the nation.
