WEST JORDAN, Utah -- An alleged burglar trying to get away from West Jordan police plowed through a front yard Monday afternoon, damaging two cars parked in the driveway.

The driver then fled the scene on foot.

It all started when police say the suspect broke into an apartment near 2800 West and 8500 South. As officers showed up, the driver sped away in a stolen truck and crashed into a yard near 9000 South and 2800 West.

"This is not something that happens every day. This is something that I would probably expect to see in a movie," said Kimberly Coppard, who lives at the home.

As Kimberly Coppard looked at the twisted street sign, muddy tire tracks and the smashed-up cars sitting in her driveway, she said she's grateful her 5-year-old daughter, or any other children, were not outside when the stolen vehicle barreled through the front yard.

"It's a sunny day so normally she would be out here playing," Kimberly Coppard said. "They like to play around the big tree here and come in and out of the house all the time."

Kimberly Coppard’s brother, Grayham, was visiting when he saw the crash. He said one of the tires from the truck flew through the air.

"And when it went up in the air it went up over this tree, it looked like it was going to land in our back yard, but it actually landed over here on the other side of the fence on 90th --  almost ended up in traffic," Grayham Coppard said.

In surveillance video captured on a neighbor's security camera, the driver is seen getting out of the truck and running away following the crash.

"It's mind blowing that he could even get out of the car," said Kimberly Coppard.

Coppard said both cars in the driveway were left not drivable.

"I really hope they catch this guy I mean he really destroyed our front lawn so I really hope they catch him," Kimberly Coppard said.

So far no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call West Jordan police at 801-840-4000.
