Dr. Scott K. Thompson, dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon of Utah Facial Plastics, tells us all about an exciting injectable that literally destroys fat cells below the chin, thus eliminating the double-chin forever.

What Is Kybella?

KYBELLA  is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, often referred to as the “double-chin”.  Kybella’s active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is one of the fat emulsifiers used in our own bodies to break down ingested fats.  When injected under the skin, fat cells in the area of injection are permanently eliminated.  New fat cells will not return unless major dietary and lifestyle changes are made.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Kybella?

As a facial plastic surgeon, I focus on the face, neck, and scalp and see many patients concerned about submental fullness. Kybella is a great option for those with mild to moderate fullness and good skin elasticity.  Patients with more advanced changes are sometimes better served by a surgical option such as submental liposuction, facelift, or necklift.

Kybella patients are typically bothered by the lack of definition along their jawline and feel that this makes them look older or heavier than they actually are. Many find that no amount of diet or exercise improves this area.

What To Expect With A Kybella Treatment

Kybella treatments are fairly quick and convenient as they are performed in an office setting and usually take 15-20 minutes to complete.  We offer treatments at both our Layton and Draper locations and provide free evaluations to determine candidacy and number of sessions. Most patients need 2-4 sessions total, spaced approximately 6 weeks apart. The treatments can be adjusted and customized to each patient’s unique situation.

We use ice to numb the area and can also provide numbing cream as necessary for extra comfort. A series of precise and specific injections are made with a fine needle. Temporary swelling usually occurs and typically subsides within 3-7 days but may be longer for more advanced situations.

What Results Can Patients Expect with Kybella?

Patients can expect to see improvement in the definition of the submental area and jawline within 1-2 months.   Friends and family often see an improvement but assume the patient has lost weight or changed his/her hairstlyle.  Once the series of sessions are complete, patients can expect to enjoy their results for many years to come.

We are excited to offer $200 off your first session of Kybella or $300 off with the purchase of one area of Botox. Call soon to schedule at (801)776-2220 or visit UtahFacialPlastics.com.
