SALT LAKE CITY — By a 3-1 vote, a Senate committee has approved a bill that would rename Columbus Day to “Indigenous People’s Day.

Senate Bill 170, sponsored by Sen. Jim Dabakis, D-Salt Lake City, would remove Columbus Day from recognition in the state in favor of a holiday recognizing Native Americans. Dabakis previously told FOX 13 that he believed Columbus “has really contributed nothing to civilization.”

The bill now goes to the Senate for debate.
