SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Ken Ivory whips out his iPhone to play a song from the hit-musical “Hamilton.”

“I cry every time I listen to it,” the conservative lawmaker confessed to FOX 13.

Ivory, R-West Jordan, loves the Broadway musical so much, he’s sponsoring a resolution in the Utah State Legislature to honor its composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. On Wednesday, he introduced House Resolution 12.

“Hamilton,” a hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton and the founding of the country, has received accolades and has become one of the hottest shows to see. House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper, managed to score tickets to it. Ivory hasn’t been able to see it, but plays the soundtrack repeatedly.

Ivory praised it for its music, dance and historical message.

“I didn’t think I was a hip hop fan but he describes it as ‘Little Mermaid’ meets Sondheim meets David McCullough meets Dr. Dre. It’s engaging, it’s bringing the nation together to understand the genius of our unlikely history,” Ivory said.

Ivory said he would love for the musical to go on tour. If his resolution passes, he said he would invite Miranda to Utah to be recognized by the legislature.
