SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah -- A “shelter in place” has been lifted off a small Summit County town after authorities were unable to locate burglary suspects found inside a home Monday morning.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office encouraged residents in Oakley to stay inside their homes if they didn't need to leave as they continued to look for two suspects responsible for a home burglary.
Officials say they got a call from a homeowner around 8 a.m. saying they were home when two men came in through an unlocked door looking to steal things.
"The homeowner probably spooked these individuals," said Det. Kacey Bates, with the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said the men ran off before the homeowner could get a good look at their description, or a description of their car. They said they also didn't know if the two men were armed or not since the homeowner didn't get a good look.
But to be safe, the sheriff's office issued a code red, or a shelter in place recommendation.
Still, most in the town didn't seemed too concerned with the threat.
"It's been business as usual," said Ken, a convenience store owner in town. "A couple of girls came in here and I said, ‘what are you doing? You're supposed to be locked down,’ and they said they needed creamer for their coffee."
Deputies said they sent out a reverse 911 call to 700 residents, or roughly half the town's population, encouraging residents to stay inside, but many in the town, had a different reaction.
"Most people around here when they hear lockdown in place, they usually unlock their doors because they got shotguns and are just waiting," Ken laughs. "This is Oakley."
