SALT LAKE CITY -- A man is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake City Sunday, and cell phone video captured by a witness shows the moment shots were fired.
Video shot by Brandy Haze and submitted to FOX 13 News shows at least three officers facing the suspect, who according to police had led officers on a short foot pursuit after a pedestrian stop on Main Street near 1300 South.
The man was shot in the area of 1376 Major Street, and the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.
The first gunshot is heard about 2 seconds into the video, and the low resolution and the camera's distance from the scene makes it difficult to determine exactly what happened. See the video above for a slowed down look at the moments before the first gunshot is heard, while the second video shows the full length of the footage but with the subject blurred.
It appears in the opening frame of the video that an adult male is standing in front of a residence. He appears to have his right hand at the level of his head. It is difficult to determine where his left hand is.
Within moments of the start of the footage, it appears the man's right hand begins to move downward from its previous position, and at that point the sounds of multiple gunshots are heard.
After the man falls to the ground, one officer approaches from the street and another appears from the rear of the residence, while two others watch from a distance.
The two officers appear to move the man slightly from his previous position, and a moment later an officer can be heard saying, "Get on your stomach right now, get on your stomach."
As the two officers appear to be handcuffing the man, an apparent bystander approaches from the right side of the frame, putting their hands up briefly as they watch the situation unfold. A police car with lights and sirens activated approaches, and an officer gets out, points a gun at the apparent bystander and says, "let me see your hands."
The apparent bystander begins to lay flat on the ground, and at that point the person filming the footage appears to drive away from the area.
Police have so far released few details regarding the shooting, saying only that the man was stopped on Main Street, prompting a short foot chase after which shots were fired. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to Sgt. Robin Heiden of the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Two officers will be placed on paid leave as the incident is investigated, which is standard procedure in such cases. State law requires that an outside agency investigate all officer-involved shootings, and Heiden said West Valley City Police Department will be investigating, as will the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
Police said they anticipated releasing further information Monday.
