Although winter brings perfect snow for our ski resorts every year, it also drags in the inversion. During the winter, colder air, which is dense, settles in the valley, while warmer air stays on top. Air pollutants become trapped in the cold air, forming a thick blanket of smog that we breathe in.

Inversion can contribute to:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Heart disease and stroke
When to seek medical attention
  • If you develop a persistent cough or wheezing
  • If you experience shortness of breath
  • If you have a compromised immune system
  • If you experience worsening asthma symptoms p
Tips to stay healthy during an inversion
  • Check air quality every day
  • Avoid exercising outside, especially when air pollution levels are high
  • Stay indoors whenever possible
  • Consider wearing a face mask if working outside
  • Limit emissions from cars and log burning
