Interior designer Kristin Rocke tells us about the design mistakes she most commonly sees and how to fix them.

  1. Knife Chopping Pillows - The severe decorator knife chop is contrived and dated. A pillow would not be found that way in nature.
  2. Poor Lighting - Layering lighting into a space creates dimension. Overhead only lighting is harsh and unflattering. It makes a space uniform. Install decorative fixtures at mid-level and lamps at a lower level.
  3. Buying Cheap - There`s a reason they said 'buy the best and you only cry once'. Manufacturers cut corners to meet low price points. Furniture components are made out of cardboard and cushions fail and collapse within 6 months. Buying a piece twice costs more than buying a better piece to begin with.
  4. The Cliché Art - Art should enhance the space and add depth to your life and experience in a space. Overplayed prints or DIY projects can cheapen a room. Fine art that has meaning to you will add value to any space.
  5. Too small a Rug - A rug joins a space and all the front legs of the furniture should be on the rug. For dining it is ideal to have all four legs of a chair on the rug even when the chair is pulled out into a seated dining position.
