SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill will appear at a news conference tomorrow in support of a bill for medical marijuana in Utah, FOX 13 has confirmed.

Gill confirmed his appearance at an event put on by the Libertas Institute, a Libertarian think tank that is backing a medical cannabis bill being introduced in the Utah State Legislature this year. He will be appearing with 30 medical cannabis patients who will support legalizing medical cannabis in the state.

Gill will advocate in favor of changing policy to ensure patients are “not treated as criminals,” Libertas Institute said. Gill told FOX 13 he is not choosing one bill over another, but will support the principle of medical marijuana as a policy consideration.

Libertas Institute is supporting a bill being drafted by Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Saratoga Springs, that would allow for medical marijuana that contains THC to be used to treat a number of conditions. A competing bill drafted by Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem, and Sen. Evan Vickers, R-Cedar City, would allow for cannabid oil to be used. Libertas Institute is opposed to Daw and Vicker’s bill, arguing it does not do enough to treat people’s conditions.

Both bills will be considered by the legislature when it meets later this month.
