UTAH COUNTY - A standoff in Eagle Mountain ended Monday evening when 37-year-old David Driscoll shot and killed himself inside his parked car.

The Utah County Sheriff's Department believes Driscoll was on the road after Orem Police found the body of his 27-year-old girlfriend Brittany Engstrom in her apartment in Orem. They believe Driscoll likely shot her multiple times, killing her.

Orem Police say they initially responded to Engstrom's apartment Monday morning around 10 a.m. after a neighbor reported hearing a loud argument inside the apartment. However, when police arrived, no one answered the door.

"One of the officers took it upon himself to return to the house to check again," said Lt. Craig Martinez with Orem Police. However, a second knock, yielded the same results.

Police say around 2 p.m. they received a call for a wellfare check at the same address. This time, police say they found the door unlocked.

"They cracked the door, announced who they were," said Martinez of officers responding. "That’s when they saw the 27-year-old victim on the floor."

Police say they immediately began searching for the victim's boyfriend, Driscoll.  Police were able to trace his cell phone signal to a parking lot at The Ranches Golf Course in Eagle Mountain.

When they arrived, they found a suicidal Driscoll with a gun in his hand. After trying to talk him out for about two hours, police say Driscoll ultimately shot and killed himself.

A look at Driscoll's background showed military experience dealing with firearms and explosives; as a result, a bomb squad was called in to search and clear his car.

As for a motive behind the killings, police say Driscoll was due in court Tuesday morning for a preliminary hearing on four charges of sexual assault of a child.
