SALT LAKE CITY — The vegetable mix in Costco’s chicken salad could be what caused an E. coli outbreak and made nearly twenty people in seven states, including Utah, sick.

The number of infected people is expected to grow in the coming weeks, even though the product was pulled from Costco stores.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that’s because the spread of foodborne illness takes time to track when it’s happening in multiple states.

The Wall Street Journal reports federal investigators are examining whether the celery and onion mix in the rotisserie chicken salad was the source of the E. coli outbreak.

Five people from Utah have been affected so far, click here for the original report on the recall, which includes specific product information as well as health and safety tips.
