SALT LAKE CITY – A woman is in critical condition after a stabbing downtown.

Officers said it happened on 270 S. Rio Grande St. near the homeless shelter at about 7 p.m. Sunday

Police said the 36-year-old woman was in a car with a group of people.

For some reason, the woman got out of the car and began arguing with two people on the street.

Police said the argument escalated and the woman was stabbed multiple times.

“The suspect on the sidewalk got into an altercation with our victim who exited the vehicle and we’re still developing information as to why there was an altercation and what started it,” Salt Lake Police Lt. Martin Kaufmann said.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
