SALT LAKE CITY — A lawsuit filed against organizers of Salt Lake Comic Con over the use of the words “comic con” may soon end in a settlement, FOX 13 has learned.

A federal judge in San Diego filed an order Wednesday scheduling a settlement conference at the end of November. It is expected she will be updated on ongoing settlement talks between San Diego Comic-Con, the nation’s largest comic convention, and organizers of Salt Lake Comic Con.

Salt Lake Comic Con co-founder Bryan Brandenburg confirmed settlement negotiations were underway between the two sides.

“We’re moving in that direction,” he told FOX 13 on Wednesday. “Both parties are making concessions.”

San Diego Comic-Con is suing Salt Lake Comic Con, accusing it of trademark infringement by using the words “comic con.” Salt Lake Comic Con has pointed to a number of similar events that use the same terminology. In July, Salt Lake Comic Con was awarded a trademark for its name.

But whether Salt Lake Comic Con gets to keep using the words “comic con” is not being discussed publicly.

“I can’t confirm or deny that we’ll keep our name,” Brandenburg told FOX 13. “In the end, whatever comes out of it will be good for the fans.”
