SANDY, Utah -- Graffiti, much of it vulgar, was sprayed across the outside of Alta High School's football stadium, and the vandalism was found the morning of the school's first varsity football match-up with Corner Canyon High School.

"I think both of us, both schools, acted similarly: We were both surprised," said Paige Nelson, Student Body President at Corner Canyon High School.

Along with other student leaders, she took action.

"We called them, and we asked them if they needed help cleaning up anything," she said. "There was kind of some issues with the liability issues, so we didn't have a chance to go over."

Denied the chance to help clean up the mess, students at both schools turned their focus, not to the football field, but to another effort meant to mark the rivalry.

"They've been having what they're calling the 'hunger games', and it's a food drive for the Utah Food Bank and both schools have been having donations all week," said Jennifer Toomer-Cook, Spokeswoman for the Canyons School District.

Between the two schools, more than a ton of food was collected.

Sandy police are investigating the vandalism. They don't know if any students at either schools were involved.

According to Toomer-Cook, Corner Canyon suffered a small bit of graffiti on rivalry day as well.
