SALT LAKE CITY – The most recent report from the Utah Department of Public Safety shows that DUI-related fatalities nearly doubled in Utah between 2013 and 2014.

According to the report, there were 23 DUI-related fatalities in 2013 and 45 in 2014, representing an increase of about 96 percent.

Utah Highway Patrol Troopers urge those who go drinking to be sure they have a designated driver or other source of safe transportation lined up, and they said those who drink and drive will be brought to justice.

“We’re coming out to get you,” said Sgt. Todd Royce of the Utah Highway Patrol. “We’re looking for you—highway patrol, local agencies, county agencies—it’s a big deal for us.”

UHP says preventing DUI-related deaths ultimately comes down to responsibility and the choice not to drive after drinking.
