BOUNTIFUL, Utah – The Woods Cross Police Department teamed up with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to teach kids to fish.

The new club will meet twice a week for six weeks, the city and DWR provide a fishing pole for each kid in the club.

The goal is for kids to learn all the skills it takes to fish alone.

Officers will be by their side helping them learn to tie knots, bait a hook, cast a line, reel the fish in, then release the fish back into the water.

The UWR sponsors various clubs to help kids get into the out doors but they’re excited other organizations are getting involved.

“This is major, I mean this is awesome, usually the city clubs are sponsored by the recreation department for that city,” said James Abbott, DWR Information Technician. “But having a police department I think it awesome, this is the first time a police departments sponsored one of our fishing clubs.”

The Woods Cross Police Department say they had such a great Cops and Kids Fishing Day turn out last year they wanted to do more.

They also say they want to reach out into the community and show kids police are wonderful people who are hear to help.
