Layton police identify man suspected of arson at parents’ home

LAYTON, Utah — Layton police have identified a man wanted in connnection with a fire at his parents’ home Sunday.

Police said Brian Aaron Shaw is believed responsible for a starting a fire at a home near 2200 E Antelope Dr. while his parents were at church.

Crews responded the home around noon Sunday, where they found smoke and flames coming from a garage and a car on fire.

A service door into the home was already open, filling the home with smoke, though no flames made it into the actual residence.

According to a press release, investigators at the scene declared the fire suspicious and have involved Layton Police Department detectives and a Crime Scene Unit.

The release stated the “parents of the home had left for worship service and a 41 year old son was still at home. He has not been at the fire scene and Police are actively looking for him.”

There was significant damage to the garage and its contents, and the loss is so far estimated at $40,000. American Red Cross personnel have offered assistance to the family.

Police said Brian Shaw is believed to be armed, possibly with a .40-caliber handgun, and he may have mental health issues. A press release issued Monday morning said members of the public should not approach Shaw, but immediately call police if they know where he is.

Layton police have probable cause to arrest Shaw on charges of aggravated arson and possession of a firearm by a felon.
