SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City International Airport unveiled a new program Thursday that will provide a new way to get to and from the airport.

A one year pilot program will allow online enabled companies, like Lyft, to operate at the airport.

Representatives for Lyft say one of the challenges of ground transportation at the airport is security, specifically, making sure all drivers can pass the necessary background checks. That concern is one of the reasons companies like Lyft previously could not provide airport services.

Lyft Spokeswoman Angie Palmer said they've been working with the city to make sure it's not a problem, and she said their drivers come from all walks of life.

"Lyft drivers are a huge spectrum,” she said. “We do have some full-time people, we do have some part-time people. I just interviewed a ton of dads who are trying to earn money to take their kids to Disneyland."

Lyft rides will be available at Salt Lake City International Airport starting this week.

A representative for the ridesharing company Uber said they have been operating at the Salt Lake City International Airport by working with commercial partners since May.

"It's great that the Salt Lake City airport is now allowing ridesharing," said Eric Schroeder, General Manager of Uber in Utah, in a statement sent to FOX 13 News. "Uber has been providing safe, reliable and affordable transportation options to and from the airport since May and we look forward to continuing to serve residents and visitors arriving at the airport."
