WEST VALLEY CITY , Utah – It  was a frantic situation for some residents in West Valley City  Saturday morning after a brush fire spread throughout nearly 15 acres in an empty field near their homes.

At about 9:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire at a field near 2621 South Bendixon Way.

Resident Sonia Lopez said she was on her way out to an appointment, and when her husband came out to the driveway to talk to about their Saturday plans—they noticed flames spreading in the field behind their home.

Lopez said: “I left my car on and ran inside and got [my young son], he was asleep, so [my husband is] screaming, ‘Get the kids, get the dogs, let’s just get out, get out of the house!’ So I put them in the car, I call 911, and I told them: ‘We need you here ASAP!’”

Fire crews said a fence and the siding to a mobile home melted during the fire.

The fire is now contained after burning about 15 acres, and investigators will work to determine the cause.
