LEHI, Utah — A woman who was injured by lightning in Lehi Sunday afternoon has died.

According to officials from the Lehi Fire Department, Carla Grow, 50, was standing near a tree during a picnic with family members when the tree was struck by a bolt of lightning.

“It struck the tree, but then splashed over as the lightning traveled to ground,” said Lehi Fire Battalion Chief Rick Howard, describing the scene when his crew arrived, adding that it caused “the ground to be energized which caused her to have her cardiac event.”

Grow, a beloved softball coach at Lehi High School, was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition. On Wednesday night, she succumbed to her injuries.

“Thank you for all of the help. Our dear Coach passed away peacefully last night surrounded by family. If you would like to continue to give, to help funeral costs, you are welcome to do so,” a posting on a GoFundMe.com page for Grow said.
