SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah fans are getting geared up for the first football game of the season Thursday night. It’s a match against the University of Michigan Wolverines, and it’s supposed to be a big one.

FOX 13 News caught up with some Ute fans Wednesday, who were shopping for gear at the campus store.

From seat cushions, hats, T-shirts, and foam “No. 1” fingers, the U of U campus store is selling merchandise fast for Thursday night’s big game!

Crews are preparing the facilities, and fans are getting ready for the big game Thursday night against the Michigan Wolverines.

“I was just on my way to class, and I remember that the game was coming up and that I didn’t have a U shirt yet, so I came and started looking for some gear,” said U of U student Madison Timm.

Cameron Beck from the U of U Campus Store says waves of people are coming in to buy something red for the first football game of the season.

“We’ve been doing amazing here,” he said. “It’s crowded every afternoon. It’s a lot of fun to see all the fans coming in–Utah fans and even some Michigan fans alike.”

Utah resident Michael Johnson lives in Michigan with his wife while she attends the University of Michigan, but he says that doesn’t stop him from supporting his Utes.

“But she does not cheer for Michigan, she cheers for Utah,” Johnson said.

Crews are getting the field ready, and Beck says he expects every Ute fan to be wearing something red at Thursday’s game.

“It’s obviously fun to show your fandom and show how much you love your team,” Beck said. “Especially this first game: it’s going to be a huge red out!”

The Utes beat the Wolverines in Michigan last year and Johnson says he hopes they can beat them at home.

“But I think with the season last year that Utah had, hopefully keep going with the same success,” Johnson said.

The game kicks off Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
