SALT LAKE CITY -- Labor Day is also the Salt Lake City Mission's birthday, and they need help with their  party—as they call this time of year ‘the summer slump’ when it comes to food donations at the pantry.

The shelves are full and boxes are often stacked high during the holidays, but officials at the mission say people  are often busy or out of town during the summer--meaning donations decline even though the mission operates all year-round.

The Salt Lake City Mission plans to provide 3,500 barbecue meals at Pioneer Park for families who are homeless,

But this is a big undertaking, and they are short on food and manpower.

“We are in need of volunteers to help with these projects as well,” said Rev. Joe Vazquez, Salt Lake City Mission Assistant Director. “So you can go right online and click on the volunteer page and sign up to do volunteer work. This Labor Day, if you don't have anything planned for the day, come out and help us feed the homeless.”

That outreach celebration is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.
