LAYTON, Utah -- A Layton community rallied together Monday afternoon to show support for a family that lost two in a fatal accident Sunday night, while two others recovered in local hospitals.
Utah Highway Patrol officials say shortly after 5:30 Sunday evening, a family of four was driving on I-15 in Layton when the tractor-trailer in front of them came to a stop. The truck stopped as a result of a dog house that fell off the back of another vehicle and into traffic.
A silver Mazda driven by Ryan Chambers came to a stop behind the truck, but a car behind him did not. Troopers tell FOX13 that the driver didn't even attempt to brake.
"I can't believe they're gone," said Melissa Campbelo, friend of the Chambers family.
Troopers confirmed that Ryan Chambers died at the scene of the accident, and his 5-year-old daughter Evee was transported to the hospital where she later died of her injuries. Ryan's wife Alyssa and her 7-year-old daughter Kaya were both transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Alyssa has checked out of the hospital with six broken ribs and a bruised lung. Kaya remains at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, where she is in stable condition.
"That's definitely a miracle and we are so lucky to have them," Campbelo said when she found out her friend Alyssa and daughter will both pull through.
Dozens of community members gathered in front of the Chambers' home Monday afternoon to tie white ribbons in show of support.
"Ryan was an amazing father," Campbelo said while tying a white ribbon.
Alyssa's father, Kevin Gleaves, spent the evening with his daughter and granddaughter at PCMC hoping for good news about Kaya.
"It's so touching," he said of the community turn out. "You think you're a lone in these moments, and then you realize you're not. It means a lot."
