SALT LAKE CITY – More than a dozen young people in Salt Lake City were presented with their citizenship certificates Friday.

The ceremony was held to recognize youth ages 7 to 18 who obtained citizenship through their parents. Some were adopted by parents who are U.S. citizens, and others were granted citizenship when their parents became naturalized citizens.

Organizers decided to have the ceremony at Salt Lake City’s Fire Station One to try to make the ceremony more fun for the participants.

“Citizenship is important, and we want kids to have fun with it, and I think a lot of kids enjoy the fire department–so we teamed up with them, and we’re having a ceremony here,” Said Laura McNeer of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The children were taken on a tour of the fire station after receiving their certificates of citizenship, which were presented following the singing of the National Anthem, stating the Pledge of Allegiance and repeating the Oath of Citizenship. Those given certificates Friday originally came from the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Guatemala, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and Vietnam.
