SALT LAKE CITY — A few days after it was announced that Utah’s Prison Relocation Commission had unanimously voted to move the Utah State Prison from its current location to a site near the Salt Lake City International Airport, Gov. Gary Herbert announced a special legislative session for Wednesday, August 19.

“I have called the Legislature into a special session on their August interim day to vote on the recommended site of the Prison Relocation Commission and five other issues,” Gov. Herbert stated Friday.

The site voted on by the commission is located at 7200 West near I-80 in Salt Lake City. The Utah Legislature will have to vote to approve or reject the site.

Earlier this week, State Senator Jim Dabakis and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker expressed conflicting opinions about the existence of a deal to bring the prison to Salt Lake City in exchange for the city being able to bump up sales taxes. Click here for details.
